it to the other side.  Sutkowski grew up in New Jersey, and although he lives in Brooklyn now, he remains “\u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ean emo kid at heart\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e,” garnering inspiration from bands like My Chemical Romance and Muse, the latter of whose theatrical, dramatic performances inspired the band’s own vocal-forward, soaring takes.  Initially working together as a duo while Sutkowski and Ruben Radlauer (Model\/Actriz) were at school in Berklee, the band’s self-titled 2019 debut album was recorded on an IPhone in their practice room on just drums and guitar, and the quietly striking, nuanced stylings earned them accolades far beyond the “\u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003efake record label\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e” the two made up to originally release their music.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe band’s new album, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eDirt Buyer II\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e (their first on Bayonet), was recorded in February 2020, and represents a foray into heavier material that marks a deeper shift for the band.  Now working as a trio, Sutkowski is flanked by Tristan Allen on bass (who is a puppeteer by trade building marionettes for their own solo project), and Mike Costa on drums, a fellow Berklee grad who cut his teeth playing in bands across Boston including past collaborations with Sutkowski.  Half-recorded while the band was on tour with Surf Curse, the record finds Sutkowski reaching out for places, people and beliefs to ground him.  Reeling from the aftermath of a short, intense relationship, he wrote the songs that would years on, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eDirt Buyer II \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eis an artifact of a time that is still preserved through the headrush of peak memory; the magnitude of high highs and low lows that are both addictive and transformative.  A lot of the songs are “\u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eabout impulsivity and not thinking of future you\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e,” a romantic concept in theory that with the prescience of looking back, is more about self destruction and loss of control.  “If heavy’s what you wanted \/ heavy’s what you’re gettin’ \/ heavy’s what you needed, believe me now \/\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e i\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ef change is what you wanted \/ change is what you’re gettin,” he sings on “Heavy,” ironically one of the catchiest tracks on \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eDirt Buyer II\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e.  But with that comes the opportunity to see life for what it’s worth: “\u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eI’m fortunate to have a thing that’s an outlet but also an escape.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e”  \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eWhat it means to be alive also means coming to terms with mortality itself, and Sutkowski wrote album centerpiece “Fentanyl” about an experience walking to his day job one day and being confronted by a fatal overdose he had to call an ambulance for, before reporting to work and having to carry on with his day.  Throughout the album he attempts to wrap his head around the idea of fate and how you can brush up against other people and then leave them behind.  The songs themselves play Falcon Bitch and Shmoofy, the multi-instrumentalists and best friends at the center of the BD universe, deliver each story with a wink, inviting you in on the joke. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd maybe they were actually born from a giant egg left in a meteoric crater, or they’re undercover on earth from an alien universe. Something about their music suggests it’s a dispatch from both the future and the past – vocal harmonies that sound like they’re reverberating in a medieval church to surfy guitar lines, weirdo-punky cacophonies erupting into chaos. There’s the sense that these are two people who are strangers to all that is banal - there is always fun to be had, a little mischievous magic waiting around the corner, if you know how to find or make it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eWhen Horses Would Run\u003c\/em\u003e, Being Dead’s debut record released in 2023, took years to release. The final product was excellent but expertly polished, at odds with the live rowdiness they’d cultivated a reputation for throughout Austin and beyond across seven years of being a band. For the next one, they knew they’d have to do things differently.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey decamped to Los Angeles for two weeks to record with GRAMMY-winning producer John Congleton, writing songs for the record until days before they left. The radical shift in process was welcome - a good balance and a challenge, Congleton helping them find new ways to work and helping peel back the layers on the core of their songwriting. Being Dead has grown from a duo to a trio live, including bassist Ricky Motto (who is immortalized finally on record here, particularly in the giggles on “Rock n’ Roll Hurts”) \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe resulting \u003cem\u003eEELS\u003c\/em\u003e is a darker record, tapped more into the devilishness within, but it’s also a more raucous, rougher ride sonically. There’s heartbreak, excitement, enchantment, dancing – we move through it all at a high-octane pace. Falcon Bitch and Shmoofy never want to do the same thing twice on any song, and they don’t. From the pummeling garage rock distortion of “Firefighters” to “Dragons II,” which appears in its demo form taped on a hand recorder, it’s unexpected but intuitive, and, most importantly, singularly Being Dead.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are some moments, like the refrain on the moody, rockin’ “Van Goes,” which begins with a recording of a frustrated East Coast bus driver, spirals into moments that sound closer to Devo, to egg punk, to unhinged weirdness. “Big Bovine” in its original form was a straight-ahead swing\/country jam until it evolved into the droning, punkier final form - a testament to the way Falcon and Shmoofy’s collaboration works, pulling each other into different creative spaces. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eEELS\u003c\/em\u003e is dotted with interstitials, little sonic collages of what sounds the duo simply were enjoying and creating. The spacious, sleepy “Storyback Bay” into the buoyant and absurdist “Ballerina.” And there are moments of pure, understated prettiness – the acoustic pared-back  “I Was a Tunnel,” Falcon’s crystalline vocals massive and echoing, a melancholic hymn.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“Gazing at Footwear,” a genuinely perfect two-minute nugget of moody shoegaze both angelic and hellish at the same time. “We just love Duster and thought let’s do a really fucked up, David Lynch-y song that’s stuck in a well, and now it’s kind of its own thing,” Falcon explains, shrugging. It’s become a stand-out on the record for friends, an example of what Being Dead could do - and in that way, \u003cem\u003eEELS\u003c\/em\u003e feels like an album of possibilities, little tasters of what might be next, a vast and limitless stretching out before them.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLike its animal namesake suggests, the songs on \u003cem\u003eEELS\u003c\/em\u003e are malleable, the record like slithering through murky waters or strange half dreams, mysterious and beautiful in how it moves, reflective in a wavering sheen. Dipping into each song feels like uncovering a new cavern, plunging into depths unknown but fully open to what will be revealed. On the album artwork, an illustration by the artist Julia Soboleva, there are some weird disparate spectral creatures, a stark glimmer against a cloudy darkness. Looking at the full room of show-goers Heaven says into the mic, “well this is a perfect set up for me because I love attention.” There is an earnesty in the way Grumpy asks for your attention that makes you give it to them generously.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhen someone “wolfed”, they “ate”, they “crushed”, they “devoured.” This is how Grumpy feels about their latest EP, Grumpy holds the difficult truths about themselves and swallows them whole, proudly. Take “Flower” for example: Heaven sings, “Sometimes I think of you so hard, I wonder if you can sense it”. There is a sweetness in their delivery that, coupled with the overt confidence that emits from such unabashed confessions, creates a portrait of love in a constellation. In Grumpy’s world, adoration has gravity. And they want you to feel it.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn “Beach Towel”, a gorgeous, ambient drone underscores Heaven’s a portrait of the imperfect love of friendship. They picture wearing the body of their closest confidant to their own birthday party, where everyone can witness how important they are to each other, despite not being lovers. For lead singer, Heaven, it is rare that a non-lover obtain such closeness and they want everyone to understand the status they hold in this person’s life saying, “If I could meet your older sister, I would hope she thinks I’m funny \/ She’d report back to your family that we’re very close”. The sparse, chilling instrumentation of “Beach Towel” exposes the often cocky Grumpy character as a person insistent on being thought of as loved and important to someone.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Grumpy brand of idyllic proximity to a world of potential lovers permeates through the sonics of Wolfed. Growling synth swells paired with thumb-piano cascades bleed seamlessly into wall-of-sound guitars over ripping slow-core drums on “Holding”. Heaven screams “I could be there in 5 hours, if you hold on and I speed,” as the band thrashes on harder and harder. Distorted screeches greet the ear like rings from a bell tower, where the clock is Love, and you can see it from any rooftop. And suddenly, we’re sucked back out and met with Mount Eerie-esque musings on the past. Heaven’s desire is beyond charming– their willingness to pause life for someone is palpable. And by the end of the EP the boastful, tophat wearing, dark fantasy, circus ringleader is redeemed as, just a person, wanting to give and receive love. A couple of chords and the humming of a familiar tune bring us back into a hand-holding world of safety and comfort. Heaven’s love isn’t reckless, it is playful and highly considered. Heaven may stumble and hit the wrong notes, say the wrong thing. But they do it for love. For Grumpy, those missteps are not preventable speed bumps in a relationship, but the Kintsugi cracks that make life worth singing about.. It is one of the quietest places on the planet. “I wanted to know what role the brain and the body played in how we hear, and I wanted to concentrate more on silence than how to fill it,” she says. There’s not a better place to do that than in a room that is so silent your brain and body freaks out. People have been known to have panic attacks and even aural hallucinations as a response to the room. This research pushed Kinlaw to obliterate any divide between anatomy and the process of writing and perceiving sound. A performer by nature, this quickly turned into a deep dive on how to use choreography as a way to write. She took this \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“Almost every time I dealt with anger around language and writing, my fix was to move,” she explains. At a certain moment, she hit play, recording her music, which was also a movement, and then built from there. Spit starts off with guitar feedback,” Kinlaw says, “Controlled feedback is a theme in this one. It’s captured chaos that builds the foundation of this track. Playfully critiquing the treadmill of the music industry in one song then swinging far out to pay homage to her North Carolina roots and class division, much of the album draws from Kinlaw’s life. On “HARD CUT,” this lends itself to a dazzling video. Kinlaw’s anchored to the back of a pick up truck, thrashing as the truck illegally drives through the Los Angeles River. “The song is about conditions and extremes,” she says. “It’s about being fed up.
